That's a Good Question! The Bible, the Gospels and the Qur'an are similar in principle but different in their interpretation. Are they to be taken by the letter for eternity, or to be interpreted according to changed times, more and needs? If so, by whom?
How should the Bible or the Qur'an be interpreted? Do these ancient books still speak to today's needs? Does their interpretation change with changing times? Do they need to be updated or upgraded to be useful in our day? I'll focus my answer on the interpretaton of the Bible, since it's the book i base my life upon.
How does one interpret what the Bible is saying? When i read a section of Scripture, i begin by asking, "What did this passage mean to its original readers?" TO answer this question, i prayerfully and carefully consider both the text (the words selected in a passage) and the context (the historical setting of the passage). Understanding the original message of the Scripture is what's involved in correctly interpreting the Bible.
But isn't this ancient message out of date in a modern world? Not at all. The Bible is ancient, but its truth is still very applicable. Because God does not change, what the Bible reveals about Him doesn't need to be updated.
Also, since human needs and human nature remain consistent across the centuries, what the Bible says about people still is relevant and reliable. The truth of Scripture is both timeless and timely. Its interpretation has application to various cultures and conditions.
Who is able to interpret and apply the teaching of the Bible? Anyone can (and should) read the Bible, but to fully understand its spiritual truth, you need the help of God's Holy Spirit (1 Cor 2:10-16).
Thankfully the Bible pormises that God's Spirit comes to live in everyone who sincerely trusts in Jesus for salvation.
